Our guide to finding the perfect fit for your walls!

You may have noticed that we have a few different types of wallpaper available on our website. It all seems very complicated at first, but not to worry- we’ll break things down in easy terms for you so you can move swiftly on to the fun part of selecting some samples and getting started on your wallpaper journey!

Whilst we always recommend consulting a decorator or wallpaper hanger to take a look at your walls and specify the type of paper that would best suit your space and intention, we’re happy to share with you our own experience and advice with our wallpaper that we’ve developed over the years. Click through for more (or less!) details on our wallpaper types and which one would suit you the most.

What type of wallpaper should I choose?

We have 4 types of wallpaper base available for you to choose from, all with their own benefits and perks! There’s the humble and traditional Paper Base, the eco friendly and practical Non-Woven, the smooth and beautiful Premium Non-Woven and its brilliantly glamorous sister, Premium Non-Woven Mica. Whilst the base you choose should primarily be based on the type of surface you wish to cover, it also helps to think about what kind of effect you’d like the wallpaper to have on your room. We go into detail on the different bases a little further down. All wallpaper listed on our website will have the base they are available on stated next to their colourway names for your convenience.

As of January 2024, we have slowly started to phase out paper-based wallpapers from our Studio collection. If you are interested in bulk-purchasing our paper base wallpaper designs, send us a message and we can quote you a specialised price for any orders over 20 rolls*.

Now, onto the information. Have you got your thinking caps on? If so, let’s start!

* Availability of this offer is based on current stock levels and may be subject to change. Mix and match of designs in any bulk order of paper-base wallpaper is allowed. Please enquire for current stock levels and more details.

What’s the difference between ‘Studio’ and ‘Bespoke’ wallpaper?

  • Every wallpaper in our Bespoke Collection is carefully printed onto a thick, premium non-woven base that allows for the rich design story and intense depth of colour to spring forth from your walls.

The designs are the ultimate definition of traditional with a twist. You’ll find delicate florals that exude elegance whilst being populated with cheerful little birds peeking curiously from their branches; a dusky and expansive toile featuring sturdy steer lasso’d by suave cowboys sat upon bucking broncos; even a moody damask that, upon closer inspection, is formed from the finest collection of cut glass chandeliers.

Every design within the Bespoke range can also be tailored to suit you individual needs- we can work with you to create a unique colourway to help give your interior that little kick into something spectacular. Click here for more information!

  • Our Bespoke range is exclusively available on a buttery soft and durable Premium non-woven base. Some are also available on a beautifully textured Premium non-woven Mica, a plush, thick wallpaper base with interwoven threads that have a subtle metallic sheen, adding a whole new dimension to the design.

All designs within the Bespoke Collection are specially printed to order in England and incur a wait-time of 2-3 weeks from order to dispatch date.

  • Our Studio collection is a range of wallpaper that we have specially designed to be used in a large range of places in and out of the home. A lower price point and a variety of fun, interchangeable designs and colourways ensures that your next DIY project or room makeover will never be short of fun!

A focus on geometry and playfulness means that no matter who for or where, this collection will grow along with your home. Whilst many of the Studio Collection papers are known for their colourful, cheerful quirkiness, they are always available in more subdued hues for those of you that appreciate the quiet life (whilst not losing your playful side)!

These designs are stocked right here in our London studio. This ensures that we are able to quickly pack and send your order, allowing you the freedom to focus on the rest of your new design journey!

  • The majority of our studio collection is printed on a recycled non-woven base. This base is strong, dureable and features a wonderfully matte finish that adds a picture book like quality to your walls. Some of the designs have been printed on a more traditional Paper base, which creates a more painterly feel to your walls.

We do our best to stock all of our Studio collection in-house, however there may be times that, when you order, we may be in the middle of a reprint or running low on stock. If this is the case, there may be a period of up to 10 working days for your order to dispatch. We will always alert you as soon as you order if this is the case!

How much wallpaper will I need to buy?

Now this is a bit of a must! Knowing exactly how many rolls of paper you require is paramount before ordering. All of our wallpaper is printed in batches, which means that it’s important to know exactly how much wallpaper you need ahead of time, so that we can provide rolls for you that are all from the same batch. This ensures that the wallpaper will be as consistent as possible, eliminating any potential colour discrepancies.

You will need to measure the height and width of your walls, as accurately as possible, in order to figure out how many rolls you need. Do not subtract measurements for windows and doors from your calculation. You’ll also need the repeat size of the wallpaper that you’re looking at, as well as the width and length of the wallpaper roll. You can find all of this information on the page of the design you’re interested in, under the clickable option for ‘DIMENSIONS & ROLL DATA’. As a reminder, all our wallpaper rolls are 52cm in width and 10m in length!

Now, we could go on to explain all of the various multiplications and divisions to write down alongside the above, but we’d rather stick to the simple way and advise you to either get in touch with us directly for help, or else input your wall dimensions into a wallpaper roll calculator. We recommend this one from Cole & Son.

We always say that it’s better to have a little bit of wallpaper leftover, and to overestimate how much you may need. It’s also good to hang on to some of the wallpaper you may have left over in case you need to repair or reapply portions of your wall later on. Whilst we can’t accept returns for opened rolls, we will happily refund you for any unused rolls that you may have at the end of your renovation project, as long as they are in unopened and saleable condition. Lost your included hanging guide, or want extra information about our wallpaper for your contractor/ decorator?

All of our wallpapers come with a set of instructions included so that you can immediately get to work hanging your wallpapers. Please be sure to refer to these instructions carefully if you are planning on hanging your wallpaper without the help of a decorator/ professional! If you have lost your instructions, prefer a digital guide, or require text-to-speech capability, you can pop us a message and we will happily send you a readable PDF or RTF of the relevant instructions.

Paste the wall VS paste the paper:

This is a bit of a deal breaker for some people! All of our non-woven wallpaper is hung with a ‘paste the wall’ method, which is a simple matter of applying wallpaper paste to the intended wall and then taking the roll (no need to precut the paper to wall length) and hanging the paper, smoothing it from top to bottom. This is a slightly simpler way to hang the wallpaper as it means you can adjust as you go, and you just trim the paper at the bottom, then continue as necessary with the next drop of paper beside it (being careful to match the design to the already hung strip beside it). We recommend selecting non-woven, paste the wall wallpaper if this is your first time hanging wallpaper, or if you don’t have a professional coming to help you. Our paper base wallpaper follows the ‘paste the paper’ method, which entails measuring and precutting your wallpaper, then pasting the paper itself and, after saturating it, hanging from top to bottom onto your prepared wall. We always recommend getting a friend to help you as you hang, so they can keep an eye on how things are looking as you go. Since paste the wall wallpaper paste dries fairly quickly, it can be hard to correct any mistakes, so as they always say, ‘measure twice, cut once‘- and remember, spirit levels and sturdy ladders can be your best friend when hanging all types of wallpaper!

The technical bit:

You can find a full page dedicated to the technical specifications of our wallpaper here. This page is mainly for interior decorators, wallpaper hangers and design professionals, however you can also find information about sustainable wallpaper production, inks used and fire safety, if that kind of thing floats your boat!
